[Day 5, LE] Are You Game?

[Kitsuki Edogawa]

After returning to camp, Edogawa had set uo the shogi board he'd purchased. The game wasn't as familiar to most as go or fortunes & winds were. But, the Dragon offered to teach anyone who was interested.

[Hida Masayuki]

Recovering from the festivities of the day, Masayuki takes the Kitsuki up on his offer. "Kitsuki-sama, if you are willing to teach me, I will gladly join you."

[Kitsuki Edogawa]

"Please do, Hida-san." he smiled. "Did you enjoy the festival?"

[Hida Masayuki]

Masayuki takes a seat. "Hai! it was a nice, relaxing day. And you, Kistuki-sama?"

[Kitsuki Edogawa]

He nodded. "I had fun. I also acquired a kite and a few games. Have you ever played shogi?"

[Hida Masayuki]

"This will be my first time."

[Kitsuki Edogawa]

"I hope you will enjoy it." He nodded. "Like go, shogi is a strategy game. Rather than tactical placement, it focuses on tactical manuevers. We will both begin with the same armies in the same configuration on opposing sides of the board. Our armies consist of 20 pieces, made up of 8 different types. Each is governed by different rules of movement.."

He paused his explanation, as tge Crab looked over the board.

[Hida Masayuki]

"Interesting," said Masayuki, stroking his chin as he looked over the board.

[Kitsuki Edogawa]

"The front row are the Pawns. They can move one step forward. As with most pieces, if they move into a space occupied by an enemy piece, they will capture it. But, like most pieces, they cannot move into a space occupied by an ally."

He pointed to the next row.

"On the left, is the Bishop which can move any number of unoccupied spaces diagonally. On the right, is the Rook, which can move any number of unoccupied spaces horizontally or vertically. If they enter a space occupied by an enemy, they will stop and capture it. They cannot move through a space occupied by an ally."

Then he moved to the final row. He pointed to the pieces on each end of the row. Then, he moved to the next ones, making his way towards the center piece as he described each pair.

"Lances are similar to the Rook, but they can only move forward. Knights move two spaces forward and one to the right or left. They are the only piece that can pass through occupied spaces, only capturing or being blocked by pieces occupying the space they would stop in. Silver Generals move one space diagonally or forward. Gold Generals move one space vertically, horizontally or diagonally forward. The King moves one space in any direction."

"The goal is to corner the King, threatening their position in a way they cannot escape."
