Another night, another midnight watch for Usagi Kaigen

The Hare kept up his usual rounds, evidently not all that concerned about the rumor mill.

As the Hare makes his rounds, he can hear the various sounds of a camp at rest. Overall, it's relatively quiet: the tramp of sandals from the other soldiers on patrol, the deep snores of those who'd marched hard during the day lost to their slumber.

Even the command area is mostly dark. There's a light on for the officer who makes sure that if something bad happens in the middle of the night, there's someone ready to start yelling orders, either to rouse the troops, or the general, or take whatever other steps must be taken. But in the middle of the Crane lands, there were really very few officers awake at this hour.

The only thing that seemed even slightly out of place was a brief, quiet scuttling noise. Likely a mouse taking advantage of the rice that the army had, or perhaps some careless soldier had brought their pet cat and let it get loose.

Overall, a quiet night.

Apparently there was someone making rounds above. He rose to the surface and tailed him for a bit before choosing a spot to surface.

He remembered at the last minute that he was on his underwear and without his mask. He smiled took a long breath and made his way to whoever was going through the camp.

He was close enough to be able to tell that this was a Hare. He whistled for Metsuki to land fully aware that this would drew the guards attention.

Kaigen glanced at the bird, frowned- that Scorpion lady I met back at the muster had a bird- then, his suspicions sharpened by having met Kheree for something like five minutes, took a good hard look around- ignoring the bird.

Adoka bursted into laughter briefly.

"Sanurai-same may Onnetangu keep the shadows around you short." He greeted and bowed.

"That's not the reaction I usually receive when people see me in the flesh." He added. "Thank you for making mt night way more pleasant. This one calls himself Yogo Adoka. How may he call you?"

Kaigen's expression didn't waver.

His tone when he spoke was almost conversational... belied only by the words he chose to use.

"And who the fuck is Yogo Adoka to me? You with the Legion? Who's your officer?"

He evidently took guard duty fairly seriously.

"Apologies Usagi-sama. Sometimes life surprises me and I forget my manners." He started.

"As I already communicated I am Yogo Adoka, a servant of the kami and a priest. My sensei is Shoshi Taiyou, keeper of Amaterasu Seido in the City of Stories. I was recently transferred to the 3rd Kaisha and my commanding officer is the most serene Toritaka, I have ever met. Stating my enthusiasm for my new assignment, would be an understatement. Would you let gown your guard and allow me and Metsuki-san join you?"

He shrugged. Yeap, he is not keeping this one.

"Usagi-san, this is the second time you refuse to identify your self. Failing to do so with your next words, my hand will be forced in disciplining your lack of etiquette and the disrespect towards me, my family and my Clan. Minor clans have been crushed for lesser reasons." He warned the Hare.

He had no idea if the Bayushi intended to renovate Shiro Usagi anytime soon, but this fellow made it so easy.

He gave a sharp whistle, to signal the other guards within earshot.

The Hare's whistle brought the attention of a couple of nearby guards who hustled over, weapons drawn.

They were not prepared, perhaps, for naked madman with a bird.

And with the Hida having been telling all sorts of stories about the horrors of the South, they were a liiiitle bit on edge.

They took a split second to assess the situation.

"Drunkard, Spy or Threat? Usagi-san" the senior asked.

"The one with the bird he's painted white?" the guard asked.

He took another glance at the Yogo.

"Could be, dunno, never seen his face before." he decides.

"Fetch Tortitaka-sama, urgent." he orders.

The junior sprinted away while the senior stood by with weapon ready.

"Let's just all wait here for a bit, while Kanon-san fetches your superior officer." he suggested in a way that also suggested what not waiting here patiently might entail.

He whistled and Metsuki took off. He wasn't painted but apparently these guys had issues. He remained silent and awaited for the Toritaka to join them.

"It would be far simpler for Usagi-san to apologise." He pointed to the Crab. "Sadly you are taking a fall for him by getting involved."

The Crab seemed unfazed.

"I would watch where you point that finger, 'Yogo-san.' if that is your real name. Simple guard that I am, I might mistake it for hostile spellcasting and be forced to act accordingly." he warned.

"And when your alleged superior officer arrives to confirm that yes, you're supposed to be wandering around the camp in the middle of the night in your underwear, how dare we interfere with your official duties, and demands we apologize, you'll get your apology."

"Go ahead, Hida-san." He replied.

"It's not like you understand what's going on." He added and giggled.

I actually can't wait for your commanding officer to show up. I mean if he doesn't back you, you are just kill him too. Count me impressed with your handling of the situation kiddo! You earned yourself a night with me hunting those pesky baku-no-onis that trouble your sleep.

That was rather unexpected but Adoka was still content with himself.

It is not long before the portly Toritaka arrives, accompanied by the guard who went to fetch him and a couple of others picked up along the way. He is clothed but not armored, and his daisho is in his belt.

He does not look serene as he assesses matters.

"As if there's not enough going on" he says, sighing and shaking his head.

"Report, Usagi-san."

Adoka found the whole situation hilarious. Apparently all these people grew up in a cave or something.

"Apologies Toritaka -sama but the offended party on this occasion is me." He interfered.

"Being your subordinate but otherwise higher in status by this poor excuse of guard, I demand to speak first."
