Event: Bandit Harrassment (D4, LE)

The Legion must cross the miles between East Hub Village and the Wall. While a fair bit of the lands between are settled and tamed, not all of them are, and while the size of the Legion under arms might well dissuade some attackers, its baggage train may prove to be an all-too-tempting target for many of the more desperate in the open lands between villages and between the Clans.

This event will consist of three rolls, all of which take place within a single time slot:
Detect the Bandit
The first step in keeping things safe is to see the danger. Roll Command, Meditation, Skulduggery, or Survival, TN 3 (Air 2, Void 2); success allows progress in the event, while failure lowers the Legion’s Strength by 2 as a bandit makes off with some provisions and / or equipment. Opportunities on this roll may be spent *only* on the General Examples uses listed in the Core Book, pg. 328.
Advantages/Disadvantages on this step: Expert Tracker, Subtle Observer, Keen Eyesight
Intercept the Bandit
Seeing the bandit, the PC must get to the bandit to engage them. Roll Fitness or Martial Arts [Ranged], TN 3 (Air 2, Water 2); success allows progress in the event, while failure lowers the Legion’s Strength by 1 as a bandit makes off with some provisions and / or equipment--but not as much as could have been. Opportunities on this roll may be spent *only* on the following:
  • Reduce Strife, amount depending on Element rolled (2 for Water, 1 for any other element), per Core 238;
  • Add 1 kept Ring die set to Opportunity to the next Martial Skill check made per Air Opportunity spent to that purpose;
  • Increase the TN of Attack actions against the PC during “Interdict the Bandit” by 1 per 2 Earth Opportunities spent to that purpose;
  • Inflict 1 Strife on the bandit in “Interdict the Bandit” per Fire Opportunity spent;
  • Remove 1 Fatigue from the PC per Water Opportunity spent to that purpose; or
  • Increase the PC’s Initiative in “Interdict the Bandit” by 1 per Void Opportunity spent to that purpose.
Advantages/Disadvantages on this step: Quick Reflexes
Interdict the Bandit
Reaching the bandit suggests ensuring that they never do such a thing as assail the Legions again. Engaging in a skirmish for each PC would be far too much for GM staff to handle, so instead, PCs reaching this stage of the event will do the following:
  1. Roll Initiative as if for a Skirmish
  2. Make a single Attack action (this can be any Attack action the PC can perform in a single round; Stances and Techniques apply) from Range 0-3 against their bandit opponent.
Absent modifications from the PC, the opponent
  • Acts at Initiative 6
  • Attacks at Range 0-1 with a club (damage 5, deadliness 2) in Water Stance or with Yumi at Range 2+ (players should roll for the attack, 3 Ring and 1 Skill, using any Opportunities *only* to negate Strife, as available)
  • Has 3 Strife before making the attack.
  • Dice priority: Exploding dice, exploding with strife, success, opportunity, opportunity with strife.
  • Has Endurance 9 (wearing Traveling Clothes [Physical 2]) and Composure 6
  • Will only make a single attack action if able; if not in range to attack, or if not dead or Incapacitated after the PC attacks, the bandit will flee into the night, evading capture amid the tumult.
Bandit will die if they take damage equal to or greater than their Endurance, or they suffer a critical strike of severity 12+. Bandit will be incapacitated (surrender) if their Strife exceeds their Composure or they suffer a critical strike of severity 5-11.
Advantages/Disadvantages on this step (Attack Roll): Bishamon's Blessing, Large Stature, Soft Heartness, Sworn Enemy (Ganbataar), Meekness, Daredevil

Results
  • Being defeated by the bandit (i.e., made Incapacitated or worse) will earn the PC 0 In-Game Metagame Points and cause a Minor Forfeiture of Honor and Glory (Core 300), in addition to the usual effects of being smacked with a club.
  • Unsuccessfully attacking the bandit will still drive them away, earning the PC 0 In-Game Metagame Points and Trifling Honor and Glory awards (Core 300).
  • Successfully attacking the bandit but not killing or incapacitating them drives the bandit away, earning the PC 2 In-Game Metagame Points and Minor Honor and Glory awards (Core 300).
  • Successfully attacking the bandit and killing them earns the PC 4 In-Game Metagame Points, a Minor Honor award, and a Major Glory (Core 300).
  • Successfully attacking the bandit and incapacitating them results in the bandit being taken captive, earning the PC 6 In-Game Metagame Points and Minor Honor and Glory awards (Core 300) + 1.
Earned In-Game Metagame Points may be applied to the Legion’s Strength or Discipline at the player’s direction. Additionally, each player may contribute their total number of points earned for the Legion to the overall metagame, supporting the Left or Right Hand; any uncommitted points will be awarded to the Underhand.
Note
If more participants fail this event than pass it, or if fewer than 5 PCs attempt it, the Legion’s Discipline will be reduced by 5 as morale falls. This is in addition to the reductions in Strength occasioned by PC failures.

While she had been assigned to the Legion to get rid of her Mukai was assigned to the Second due to her talents. The skilled scout, on alert after the events of the other day, easily spotted the signs of an intercepting trail perpendicular to that of the legion itself.

She quietly raises a fist and signals the next nearest samurai as she moves to stalk whoever dared act against her new home.
Her prey found the huntress pats Hachiko's neck and she and her mount set the rabbit to chase - giving out a loud war whoop to startle the bandit and set it running as her first arrow slams into the ground beside it.

Grabbed wrong number of dice for Air, does work for Water and TN would have been the same. Will use Opportunities to reduce Strife. Strife goes to 0
The sudden appearance of Hachiko, and her furious rider, bearing down was not unlike that of a vengeful spirit appearing from the night and swifter than the bandit could prepare for.

The vengeful spirit, fire burning bright in their eyes and those of their steed, runs the bandit until they are exhausted at which moment an arrow drives deep through their leg and pins them to the earth. Any attempt to pull free would certainly result in death... and might still depending on the fates.

It was not really likely that any enemy would attack a fully armed Imperial Legion within the boundaries of the Empire itself, but nevertheless Daidoji Nobu stood guard vigilantly over the horses. The horses whinnied and whickered a bit, as if something was bothering them - but in Nobu's (limited) experience with horses, they were always making some horsey noise or another.

Soon the full moon emerged from behind the wispy clouds and Nobu was entranced by its beauty. It's like a painting! he thought. The big Crane took a few moments to admire the moonlit scene. The horses weren't going anywhere, after all.

As they traveled through an area with high grass, Edogawa thought about how simple it would be for an enemy to wait in hiding for an opportunity to attack. Examining the surroundings, he spotted the ambush.

Running to intercept the bandit, Edogawa used the tall grass to his advantage. While his opponent swung and missed, the Kitsuki struck deep. While it had not been lethal, the Dragon was still unsettled by the idea of bringing death. The bandit managed to slip away in that moment.

Hida Masayuki scans for threats along the march, knowing it unlikely that we will reach our destination without some type of encounter. He has seen nothing to date, but remains vigilant. Suddenly, by the light of Lord Moon, he spots someone who seems to be moving surreptitiously with the troops off in the brush.

Masayuki alerts the unit and the Fourth Kaisha leaders to the threat in a calm and matter-of fact voice. "To the left, we have someone sneaking and following the group. From sounds up ahead, there may be more. Let us ensure that this threat is handled and our supply train is preserved."

Opportunity negates strife


As Masayuki raises his hand to move his unit toward the bandit, he is cut off by a horse coming to a stand still in his path, becoming blocked in. He hides his impatience and commands his unit forward with resounding enthusiasm. Once his charges have moved on and others are pursuing around him, he turns his attention to unmiring the horse from the thick mud where it is stuck.

This is normally the time of night where Yoshi would me making his final rounds for the night, doing his final inventories and imagining sharing a bunk with someone lovely. Tonight though, there is a flicker of torchlight at the edge of the camp that is closing.

"Hmmm?" It takes a second for it to click. "Oh, it's raiders going for the supplies."

Another moment for that to sink in.

"The supplies. MY supplies? Oi! You bastards! I paid for some of that with some of my own money!" Yoshi had never before been quite so grateful to the Legionnaire drill instructor for the seemingly endless laps the courtier had needed to qualify as an officer in an impromptu boot camp. The bandit holding a crate seeming surprised to see him, but responds with a gap toothed grin.

"Oh, I'm going to have some fun with you." Yoshi certainly seems like an easy mark. No heavy weapons, barely any armor and only the hint of a wakizashi at Yoshi's belt. A soft, monied looking individual who might even fetch some ransom. There was only one problem with his analysis.

You NEVER, messed with a Kasuga's STUFF.

The bandit comes forward but Yoshi, moving with rage fueled by greed, smashes his face with a Tetsubo.

Alerted by Masayuki's shout, Hametsu, already in the supply area checking for materials for sharpened stakes, swung into action. Taking up his bow, he strode into the open field to the left of the supply train. Wasting no movement, he nocked an arrow and called out in a firm voice.

"I am Doji Hametsu of the Niihara family." A bandit, perhaps a ronin familiar with Hametsu's work with the 1st Crane Army, immediately dropped his club and took off for the hills.

"You are interfering with the Emperor's business in violation of Imperial Law. The penalty for this is death."

He then smoothly retrieved an arrow from his quiver and sent it into the foremost bandit's thigh. The bandit was able to mitigate the damage, but the arrow shot through his sleeve, leaving a great tear in his clothes. Frightened, he did his best to return fire, but vastly overshot the Crane, who even now was pulling a second arrow from his quiver. Deciding that discretion is the better part of valor, the bandit turned tail and fled close on the heels of his nearest buddies.

Of course the bastards would show up when he was trying to sleep.

Of course they would.

So he scrambled out of his tent without having time to don his armor, grabbed his katana, and went looking for trouble, finding it without much fuss.

The guy seemed to think he had enough of a head start on Kaigen to get away clean. He thought wrong, as the Hare, absolutely infuriated by having his sleep interrupted, barreled down on him, sword in hand. Having to close the distance meant the bandit managed to get a swing off first, which Kaigen took on his left shoulder, but that was fine.

The guy had a club, he had a sword.

He was a bit too groggy to properly chop the miserable fucker up, but, you know. Whatever. Things were tough all over.

At least he got to sleep through his usual watch shift.

Two-handed katana swinging means Kaigen inflicts a total of five damage, nerfed to 3 by armor, bandit can defend, down to 6 Endurance. Off he trots.

3 Honor, 3 Glory, a character very much annoyed to have been woken up in the dead center of his usual sleep rotation, and my own profound annoyance with 5E's mechanics all logged :P

2 points of Strength, since I cannot imagine anything Kaigen does here bolstering Discipline.

Adoka was swimming when he recognised from Metsuki's cries that something amiss was taking place. He had returned to his tent and was fully dressed and equipped this time.

Finding the area of the skirmish was easy. As was locating some bandit too. He decided that involving the kami was an overkill and decided to make it personal. It didn't prove his best choice and sadly not the last bad one. He readied his bo and recklessly trusted the void.

"Amaterasu's tits!" He cursed.

Interdict the Bandit
Reaching the bandit suggests ensuring that they never do such a thing as assail the Legions again. Engaging in a skirmish for each PC would be far too much for GM staff to handle, so instead, PCs reaching this stage of the event will do the following:
  1. Roll Initiative as if for a Skirmish
  2. Make a single Attack action (this can be any Attack action the PC can perform in a single round; Stances and Techniques apply) from Range 0-3 against their bandit opponent.
Absent modifications from the PC, the opponent
  • Acts at Initiative 6
  • Attacks at Range 0-1 with a club (damage 5, deadliness 2) in Water Stance or with Yumi at Range 2+ (players should roll for the attack, 3 Ring and 1 Skill, using any Opportunities *only* to negate Strife, as available)
  • Has 3 Strife before making the attack.
  • Dice priority: Exploding dice, exploding with strife, success, opportunity, opportunity with strife.
  • Has Endurance 9 (wearing Traveling Clothes [Physical 2]) and Composure 6
  • Will only make a single attack action if able; if not in range to attack, or if not dead or Incapacitated after the PC attacks, the bandit will flee into the night, evading capture amid the tumult.
Bandit will die if they take damage equal to or greater than their Endurance, or they suffer a critical strike of severity 12+. Bandit will be incapacitated (surrender) if their Strife exceeds their Composure or they suffer a critical strike of severity 5-11.

There were many ways to meditate and it had been years since Mari could count on regular access to a quiet space with no distractions for the traditional sort of sitting and focusing on...nothing really. But walking meditation worked well on the move. Count your breaths, match your steps, let the count fall away and simply exist in the moment, taking everything in and observing. Or on a night like this, settle on top of a wagon, looking out over the many fires of the camp, the shadows of flags fluttering by tents, the...person rummaging in the wagon who doesn't seem to know what he's looking for? Someone hoping to find those medical supplies that were, as that Yogo put it, recreational?

Looking over the side with a "Can I help you?" She only had a moment to pick up on the ragged clothing before the fellow was swinging what felt like half a tree into her face, knocking her from the wagon. There was just enough time to think "Oh...that's the swinging branch the stones warned of," on the way down. Still, the omens had given her what she needed for protection. It was hardly a movement to roll beneath the wagon as she shook the stars from her eyes.

Hands against the dry earth, she began speaking to the spirits there and watched as feet in ragged straw sandals came around the side looking for her...probably. Her fingers dug in and *pulled*. The elemental spirits amplified the motion and opened the ground beneath the bandit. She reached, closing her hand around empty air, but the earth following her command closed tight around his legs.

There wasn't going to be any more meditating with the fellow shouting and clawing at the earth like that. Mari sighed, rolling out to go straighten out the mess he'd made of the wagon, and...hearing other cries throughout the camp...start pulling out the basic supplies she would need for the probable injuries occurirng.

Daikumo is standing by the supply tents, contemplating the work he did that day. While observing the supplies he notices a bandit out of the corner of his eye. Without hesitation, he moves on the bandit with ferocity and clarity of purpose, closing on them in just a few moments. His towering presence and aggressive approach frightening the bandit who takes some wild defensive swings, recovering their footing and preparing to defend themselves. Daikumo's response is merciless and the mountain of a Dragon lets loose with a terrible swing from his yari. The bandit realizes another hit like that would end him and flees.

Yoshiko while going to her tent noted something odd happening around. She readied her bow and let the arrow follow the way as the Bandit went "Ouch... you stupid..." He knocked an arrow to the Hida that wasn't too hard to miss. "HEY!" The girl took her tetsubo out and moved the Bandit. "Eeep!" The Bandit screamed. The Hida next to him whispered. "Drop the supplies and you won't get hurt." The Bandit left. Yoshiko sighed. I hope he learned his lesson... I am glad he isn't...hurt that bad.
