[D2, ME] Scholarly story time (open)

by Yogo Osamu
Clustered around one fire amid the rows of tents was a small group of low-ranking officers, shugenja, and especially pious rank-and-file legionnaires listening to a skinny Scorpion priest's lecture on the practical applications of Rokugani theology for an army on the march. Clearly taking his spiritual responsibilities very seriously, Yogo Osamu was speaking with a passionate confidence that rarely attached to the bookish man. As he continued, even some of the skeptical attendees of his talk found themselves nodding and listening intently to his ideas for ensuring the moral fortitude of the 42nd Legion.

A Yogo speaking of moral foritutde?

How novel.

When the Yogo took a moment between this point and that, he was interrupted by an Otomo.

"Yogo-san, I have a question. You have spoken at great length of how to mantain one's moral fortitude. But I would like to pose the question of why to you. I have my own beliefs on why it is important, but I believe others here might benefit from your viewpoint." she questioned.

"Ah, yes, of course. Yes, excellent question, uh, Otomo-sama. Yes, you see... One's moral fortitude is, ah, like one's grounding, one's ties, to our blessed realm of Ningen-do. Creatures of other realms, they will be drawn to that which is like them - which is out of place, here - and so that which is unnatural - is, is most dangerous," the Scorpion continued, speaking excitedly and gesturing strongly with his hands. "It is not drawn to, to our bravest, to our most honorable, it is drawn toward weakness that we must then, ah, pursue, with noble champions, like the legions of our glorious emperor, the child of heaven."

The Yogo's energy and dedication were not in doubt, though he seemed just a touch winded as he sat back happily, clearly pleased with his answer.

As oppposed to the Otomo that spoke with an easy grace, occassionally gesturing with a fan.

"Ah, so you propose moral fortitude as a preventative measure for the troubles that may inflict one in this world alone, Yogo-san?" she questioned. "Does it not also have a bearing on the world yet to come, or is Yogo-san proposing the two are unrelated?"
