Like most non-heriditary positions of power in Rokugan, many who fill the ranks of the Emerald Legions are political appointees. There are whole legions who exist merely on paper so various samurai have a title to impress upon others how important they are. One might assume that Miya Ugemi is such a paper tiger, but they would be wrong. As Aide de camp, Ugemi is in charge of manging a great many of the general's day to day affairs, be it making sure the general's food and transportation are taken care of, to making sure the urgent intelligence reports get to the general, and that those that are beneath his notice find the appropriate person instead.

As a member of the Miya family, Ugemi is well trained in the courtly arts, and juggling the diplomacy required when dealing with multiple clans on a daily basis. Still, he is certainly looking forward to the end of this campaign, as he has a courtship in process that he would like to tend to. But for now, he can abide with the exchange of letters with his loved one. And with Ugemi controlling traffic, you can bet that his (and everyone else's letters) will find their way quickly.

Description:

Tapped specifically for this mission, Hiruma Akako is certainly the local expert for where the army is currently going. Akako has not been in the Emerald Legions for very long, and her gruff Crab demeanor means she has subordinates, but no comrades. Her previous postings was at Kyuden Hida, so while she is gladdened to be bringing aid to the wall, she's anticipating a frosty reception for having left in the first place. Of course, the decision to join the Emerald Legions was not her's but her lords, but it's always easier to blame someone for their lord's decisions.

Have you ever wondered about true identity of the prisoner in Whispers of Betrayal? The significance of the cat eating an octopus in Silent Stings? Which island the mysterious hatmaker hails from in The Court of Half-Truths? Najimi will be happy to use up as much of your fleeting time remaining in this realm to tell you all about it.

Description: If ever there was a Crane etiquette master who wanted a final test of their student's courtesy, Otosanuchi no Karen would be the perfect final boss. Karen's family are incredibly successful vintners among the Mantis with strong ties to the Tortoise. They'll be branching out into becoming the Empire's premier sake brewers any day now, according to Karen, just as soon as a few minor paperwork issues are ironed out. Still, their wealth was sufficient to get Karen, a Minor Clanswoman, a position in the Emerald Legions. After all, while money is supposedly beneath a samurai, there will always be those who are well connected, but live beyond their means. Koku for a political appointment: an ugly truth.

Ugly is also a good way to describe how Karen talks to people. She is rude, demanding, and condescending to anyone beneath her, and her estimation of who is 'beneath her' extends to anyone who cannot or will not immediately end her. When caught out by someone who can, she can lower herself, but woe betide the next person she interacts with her who actually is beneath her.

Description:

The youngest member of the command staff, Undomei is well known for his soft-spoken and gentle nature. However, while he is both pious and peaceful, he serves the army as it's chief physician passionately. He's seen some fairly nasty injuries in his short time with the army, and will see many more as long as he stays. Still, each successful recovery is a victory for him to cherish. He does not regret being unable to save those whose injuries were too severe, recognizing he is only mortal. Still, he would much rather save a patient than lose one, and he will fight until the very end to save them.

[Shinjo Meilin]

Description:

Despite her relative youth and small size, Meilin speaks as if she were looking down upon you from atop her massive Unicorn steed. A prodigy of the Unicorn, she swiftly ascended the ranks of the unicorn's clan magistrates before receiving an appointment to the Emerald Legions. Command has always been her goal, and she expects the performance of her troops on this campaign to serve as the stepping stone for her way up the chain.

Description:
While Shinji is a deeply spiritual samurai, he's quite friendly to his fellow samurai. True, his situation means that he has little to offer in aid other than a smile and his good name, but those he will give and freely.

Description:

There are many thorns to guard the blooms in the gardens of the Crane. Were it not for her family's political connections, Kumiko would likely being serving as some courtier's yojimbo, quietly watching for threats at any of the courts in the Empire. But Kumiko's parents felt their daughter deserved a higher duty, and she would be loathe to refuse them. She serves well, though without any real ambition other than to serve well. Truly a soldier's soldier, perhaps not destined for distinction, but the backbone of any fighting force.

Description:

If there was ever a samurai who embodied the phrase 'Hide a knife behind a smile' it'd be Fuwanan. He's always quick with a joke, and quicker with a laugh. His command style is very jovial, and he never demands more than his soldier's can accomplish. But little is known about him beyond that. His previous posting was serving as a a yojimbo at Kyuden Otomo, and some whisper that he must have learned or done something quite sinister to go from there to here. But if Fuwanan hears such rumors, he simply laughs. And smiles.

Description:

If Tekkan is a grand temple atop a tall mountain, Shippai is a shrine stone tossed upon an unscalable cliff. He delegates all his duties upon his subordinates, and spends as much as his time in solitude as he can. Of course, much is expected of Shippai. His father is a well respected officer in the Dragon armies, his grandfather was a legendary kenjutsu master. If one looks farther back in his heritage, they would even note that one of the younger Hantei children wed into his line. While his posting in this campaign is not particularly prestigious, his family hopes this will be where he first distinguishes himself.

A late addition to the 42th Legion, Otomo Hana's most recent posting was at Pale Oak Castle. She was widely regarded as a darling of the court, captivating many her with charm and beauty. In fact, she had a pair of rival suitors, from the Lion and the Unicorn clan, spend a great deal of time last winter vying for her favor. Tragically, the blooms of romance were cut short as the two rival suitors engaged in a shi duel over a matter of honor. The resulting kharmic strike doomed them both, as the Heavens themselves ruled neither should have her.

It was felt some time away from the scene of such a tragedy would be good for her, so her family arranged a posting for her in the 42nd, where she is joined by her two closest confidants from childhood, Isawa Hana and Kakita Hana.

A late addition to the 42th Legion, Isawa Hana's most recent posting was at Pale Oak Castle. Despite her relative young age, she demonstrated her superior education in a myriad of ways. She also led many discussions on the imbalance of the elements in the Empire, arguing very strongly against the Unicorn and their strange gaijin magic.

Her presence within the 42nd Legion was requested by Otomo Hana, and her family was happy to arrange the appointment so the two could remain together.

A late addition to the 42th Legion, Kakita Hana's most recent posting was at Pale Oak Castle. She spent most of the last court demonstrating the superiority of the Kakita style of dueling with spars in the dojo. She was allowed to serve as one of the witness for the fated shi duel between Otomo Hana's suitors, though she was clearly less than impressed that it ended in a kharmic strike. She does not dispute the result...but felt it was just.....just a failure of either duelist to distinguish themselves.
