Kaigen had never flown a kite in his life, let alone in what might be called combat kiting.

But he had quick hands, and a certain killer instinct, and managed to keep his little airy creation.

The tall Hida girl followed the flow of the air allowing the kite to soar. The up winds though were a bit of a struggle but she would control without grace.

Mari hadn't built kites since acolyte days and the task brought back memories of young shugenja soaring over rocky cliffs among kites that served to further entice and excite the air kami there.

No cliffs today, but plenty of breeze when it was needed. She pulled ribbons from her waist to decorate the corners of the elegent paper contraption, and painted a remembered haiku celebrating fine autumn winds onto the upper surface. It so delighted the air that nothing seemed able to bring it down; though a couple of close calls proved to Mari that she'd already become irrationally attached to the little scrap of paper and glue.
