After the initial wave of Tainted forces break upon the Wall, it comes time to sally forth against them…

PCs may each work to secure an advantageous position on Dangerous Terrain (Core 267): characters suffer Fatigue equal to the Strife on their kept dice. PCs may take one of three options to do so.
In the first, they may attack the enemy position (Assault, per Core 278), making a TN 3 (yes, 3) Tactics check, generating 1 Momentum Point per 2 Attrition inflicted upon the enemy force.
In the second, a PC may make a targeted strike against a prominent member of the opposing force. This is mechanically equivalent to issuing a Challenge (Core 278); the challenge will be accepted by a goblin warrior: (Begin skirmish with goblin)

Warrior Goblin

Earth 2 Water 1 Fire 3 Air 2 Void 1
Artisan 0 Marital 3 Scholar 0 Social 2 Trade 1
Endurance 10 Composure 6 Focus 5 Vigilance 2

Advantage: Fearsome Presence (Fire, Social, Interpersonal)
Disadvantage: Quick to Anger (Fire, Social, Interpersonal)

Gear:

Small yari: Range 1, Damage 5, Deadliness 3, Wargear
Small yumi: Range 2-3, Damage 4, Deadliness 3
Gear: Scavenged ashigaru Armor (Physical 3)
Clarification: If you win this challenge, you get to add momentum equal to your focus to the event.
If you lose this challenge, your character is killed and unable to further participate in the game.
In the third, a PC who can perform Invocations may attempt one against the advancing force. Perform the Invocation as normal; success generates Momentum, and inflicts EITHER Attrition OR Panic on the enemy army (as the player chooses), equal to the Rank of the Invocation.

Do note, however, that Spiritual Backlash carries particular dangers within the Shadowlands. In addition to the regular effects of Backlash (Core 190), characters receive a Shadowlands Taint Adversity related to the Ring used to perform the Invocation for every 3 Strife past the Backlash (i.e., 3 Strife causes Backlash, while 6 Strife awards a Shadowlands Taint Adversity). Failing to perform the Invocation also awards a Shadowlands Taint Adversity related to the Ring used with the Invocation.

The kansen do not play fair.

Jade Strike, Essence of Jade, and Tomb of Jade, for obvious reasons, do not incur the particular dangers, although they may still trigger Backlash as normal.

Please note that, due to this being an action of armies, the Invocation does not benefit from bonus successes.
This Stage is successfully completed once the Legion earns 8 Momentum (not cumulative with Stage 1).

Just a reminder:

PCs may each work to secure an advantageous position on Dangerous Terrain (Core 267): characters suffer Fatigue equal to the Strife on their kept dice.

Let me know if you need a goblin to deal with personally :)

by Agasha Daikumo
Agasha Daikumo begins preparing his offerings, pulling several pages from the small bound group of pages. Some old notes he took on proper forge management, a few writings about breaking down and maintaining blades, and some personal thoughts on wooden stakes and how iron or steel would be better for holding things in place. He begins calling upon the kami and requesting their aid in burning away some of the goblin filth assaulting the samurai. What he hears back are whispers of failure to beseech them. They do not react to his call and he only hears whispers from kansen instead.

by Daidoji Nobu
After hewing the goblin champion in half, Daidoji Nobu snarled in rage and shook his blooded naginata. There was a momentary opening as the other goblins quailed before the big Daidoji’s wrath.

“Follow me!” he roared to the legion, and rushed forward into the gap, heedless of his safety.

The other legionnaires looked at each other for a moment, then followed the charging Crane into the melee.

Success with 1 bonus success. 1 rank of Command, so inflicts 2 Attrition = 1 Momentum
1 water opportunity to regain 1 fatigue (now 6/8). Strife (2/12).

(GM Note: fatigue was reset to half when exceeded at the end of last stage, so you are now at 3/8)

by Kasuga Yoshi
The pitch that was lit before goes up, oscuring the battlefield for a moment as the archers blind fire. Yoshi analyzes the movement and lets out a grim smile.

"How the hell did I get stuck doing this?"

As the archers fired, he stands on top of the wall, waving a torch. It makes him an enormous target for the goblins, who whizz arrows over his head, causing Yoshi to drop behind the wall. But being the big fat target and the chaos means that none of the goblins notice the detachment slip out of a hidden gate and charge their unexposed flank, breaking the cohesion of the enemy force.

by Doji Hametsu
Hametsu quietly determined that to secure the next stage in the advance, someone would need to strike at an angle into the horde and hold, creating an opportunity for others to sweep a section of the horde into the River of the Last Stand. Squaring his shoulders, he directed a team of angry-looking Matsu to gather in close.

"Some of us will die here, but that is what samurai are for. Draw your swords in the name of Lady Sun and follow me."

And then he walked into the horde, striking left and right, entirely unfazed by the chittering death all around him. And the Matsu followed, their shouts swallowed in the eerie silence of their leader's quiet march.

Utterly wasted roll. Sorry everybody. 1 opportunity spent to adapt Hametsu to the danger of the situation, per the bespoke opportunities for this event.

by Usagi Kaigen
Kaigen had, by virtue of being on the far side of the wall, missed the opening festivities.

And equipped as he was- in light armor, with nothing heavier than his daisho- he was selective about his targets. More or less.

So when he spotted a goblin who seemed to be somewhat in charge of a unit, he decided to introduce himself.

[OOC: Goblin required, comabt will be slooooow unless Ghosted]
