Having arrived on station, the Legion must now deploy itself to best effect. The veteran Crab manning the Wall are happy to have the relief, although no few of them look askance at the koma in their midst, knowing that many of them will not survive what is coming.
This Event consists of three parts, which must be attempted in order; each PC may make a TOTAL number of rolls in the Event equal to their Focus + 1. Any part of the Event not attempted is considered to be failed, with the listed consequences.
During this event, Opportunities may only be spent as follows:
- Gain one Information Tidbit per 2 Opportunities spent for that purpose, rolling 2d20 to determine what Tidbit is revealed.
- Remove 1 Strife per Opportunity spent to that effect (2 if Water)
- Remove 1 Fatigue per Opportunity spent to that effect (2 if Earth)
Advantages/Disadvantages applied to this step: Dead Eyes, Subtle Observer, Famously Reliable, Seasoned, Indomitable Will, Bluntness, Whispers of Failure, Gaijin Name, Stained Lineage, Whispers of Doom, Ferocity, Delusions of Grandeur, Irrepressible Flirtation, Belligerant, Conspiracy, MeeknessKuni Assessment
The Kuni are…anxious about the spiritual security of the forces defending the Wall. They insist on assessing whether or not untoward influences are at work upon those who will fight against the One Enemy through the touch of jade and light refracted through crystal. Any PC with a Shadowlands Taint Disadvantage is immediately recognized as such and will be investigated thoroughly or executed as appropriate to their behavior with the Kuni.
Those who pass the initial assessment are questioned…intensely. Keeping composure while maintaining appropriate boundaries is key; emotional outbursts will not help, nor will suffering being pushed around. Make a contested roll of your Element / Courtesy against the Kuni’s 3 Skill, 2 Ring (roll for both yourself and the Kuni, please) as the Kuni effectively interrogates you; this counts as a Social Skill roll for purposes of Advantages, Disadvantages, Techniques, and School Abilities. Success (that is, meeting the TN set by the Kuni's roll) affords you one additional success to be applied to either of the next two rolls in the Event, plus 1 for every two bonus successes (these may be apportioned as the player desires). (It may be used to help you meet the TN on the future roll. Make your roll, add however many additional successes you've earned from this stage.)
Failure imposes an amount of Strife upon you equal to the amount by which you failed the roll, in addition to any Strife suffered from making the roll (i.e., if you roll 2 Sux / 0 Opps / 3 Strife to the Kuni’s 4/0/3, you suffer a total of 5 Strife [3 from your roll and 2 for the shortfall]). The Kuni will not allow any to proceed further into the Wall and its accommodations who do not pass their interrogation; failures at this stage must be reattempted, and those who become Compromised may find themselves subject to additional investigation. After all, an upright person would not be angered by appropriate caution in dangerous circumstances…
Any Strife and/or Fatigue incurred carries over into subsequent portions of this Event.
Advantages/Disadvantages applied to this step: Cognitive Lapses, Fukurokujin's Blessing, Haunted, Secrets, Harmony, Curiousity, SuperstitionGet Briefed
Once admitted into the Wall and its support, the Legionnaires must be advised as to what they face so they can make an earnest attempt at facing what will come. Roll Culture, Theology, or Skulduggery, any approach, TN 4, to master the relevant information. Success adds your Focus to the Legion’s Strength, plus 1 for every 2 bonus successes; failure reduces the Legion’s Strength by an amount equal to your Status Rank, as your lack of knowledge influences those who must obey you. Fortunately, this roll may be re-attempted, provided the PC has more rolls available.
Advantages/Disadvantages applied to this step: Famously Lucky, Fabulously Wealthy, Talented Herbalist, Dashing Scar, Dangerous Allure, Daredevil, Benten's Curse, Whispers of Cruelty, Scorn of the Mantis, Scorn of the Utaku, Ebisu's Curse, Maimed Visage, Sworn Enemy (Ganbatar), Provacation, Sake, Generousity, Bathing, Stories, Travel, Animal Bond, Playfulness, Armament, Fortune Telling, Honest Work, Perfectionist, Eyes of ManyGet Settled
After being briefed, there is some small time to integrate with the Crab forces who do this every day. Roll Games, Performance, or Labor, any approach, TN 3, to make some demonstration that pleases lookers-on. Success adds your Vigilance to the Legion’s Discipline, plus 1 for every 2 bonus successes; failure reduces the Legion’s Discipline by an amount equal to your Glory Rank, as your lack of knowledge influences those who look up to you.
Sleep tight.
