Event: The Sixth Company Falters (EN)

Museru Mura is behind the lines, but between it and the Wall is a barren stretch of land, blasted by magics and torn by centuries of battles. Hospitable, it isn’t, although it hosts its own denizens, who speak in sweet voices to those who give ear…

During this Event, Opportunities may be spent on General and Conflict and Martial Skill uses (Core Rules, pg. 328). They may also be spent to utilize Techniques, as appropriate.

Strife (and Fatigue, if applicable) is cumulative throughout the Event.
Rouse to Wakefulness

The first step to thwarting danger is to learn of its presence. But acknowledging the faint murmurings of voices in dream is a difficult thing…

Roll Command, Meditation, Skulduggery, or Survival, TN 3 (Air 2, Void 2). Success allows you to become aware of the danger and proceed to Resist the Darkness; failure does not.

You may attempt this roll a number of times equal to your Vigilance. You contribute a number of Momentum to this Event equal to your Vigilance minus the number of attempts you make at this roll, to a minimum of zero.
Advantages/Disadvantages applied to this step: Cognitive Lapses
Resist the Darkness

The voices speak more loudly to those who are awake to hear them. They promise power and purpose to those who will heed them and stop trying to oppose the inevitable spread of the Shadowlands. Will you heed their call, or will you stand firm?

Roll Culture, Theology, or Meditation, using any approach, against TN 3. Success adds one Momentum, plus one for every two bonus Successes. Failure constrains character behavior, as noted on Confront the Danger, below.

Characters may stake Honor on this roll, gaining one additional rolled Skill die per Rank (edited to clarify: 10 points) staked on the roll. (Keep in mind that failing a roll means forfeiting the staked Honor.)

Those with Virtue or Fortunes’ Blessing Advantages roll one more Ring die on this roll per such Advantage they have (this does not allow them to keep more dice than normal, however). Those with Shadowlands Taint, Flaw, or Fortunes’ Curse Disadvantages roll one fewer Ring die on this roll per such Disadvantage they have, to a minimum of one.

Success or failure, the PC then proceeds to Confront the Danger.
Advantages/disadvantages applied to this step: Indomitable Will, Whispers of Failure, Whispers of Cruelty, Whispers of Doom, Disdain for Bushido (Righteousness), Haunted, Superstition, Jealousy, Perfectionism, Delusions of Grandeur, Conspiracy
Confront the Danger

The commander of the Sixth Company, Chui Mirumoto Shippai, has heard the call of darkness and answered it gladly. Grown berserk and dangerous, he lashes out at those around him, raving as his swords swing again and again and again. Like a rabid dog, he must be put down, and swiftly.

Those who succeed at the Resist the Darkness roll a Martial Skill of their choice -or- Theology, any approach, TN 3, fighting against the crazed and darkly empowered commander. This counts as a Martial Skill check for all purposes, targeting Shippai. Success adds 1 Momentum, plus 1 for every 2 bonus successes. Failure imposes no direct penalty.

Those who fail the Resist the Darkness roll one of the following, Void approach, TN 3, urged by the whispering voices towards ineptitude in thwarting their designs: Culture, Government, Command, Fitness, Labor, Skulduggery, or Survival. (You must keep as many successes as you are allowed to, must explode exploding dice, and if given the choice between a clean success and a success with strife, you take the strife.) This counts as a Martial Skill check for all purposes, targeting another Legionnaire. Success subtracts 1 Momentum, subtracting an additional 1 for every 2 bonus successes. Failure neither contributes to nor detracts from Momentum.

Shugenja may instead opt to cast an Invocation to hinder (for those who successfully Resist the Darkness) or aid (for those who fail to Resist the Darkness) Shippai. Perform the Invocation as normal; success adds (for those who successfully Resist the Darkness) or subtracts (for those who fail to Resist the Darkness) Momentum equal to the Rank of the Invocation, plus 1 for every 2 bonus successes. (Those who failed to Resist the Darkness: you must keep as many successes as you are allowed to, must explode exploding dice, and if given the choice between a clean success and a success with strife, you take the strife.)

Do note, however, that Spiritual Backlash carries particular dangers so close to the Shadowlands. In addition to the regular effects of Backlash (Core 190), characters receive a Shadowlands Taint Adversity related to the Ring used to perform the Invocation for every 3 Strife (or 4 Strife for members of the Crab Clan) past the Backlash (i.e., 3 Strife causes Backlash, while 6 Strife awards a Shadowlands Taint Adversity [7 for Crab]). Failing to perform the Invocation also awards a Shadowlands Taint Adversity related to the Ring used with the Invocation.

The kansen do not play fair.

Jade Strike, Essence of Jade, and Tomb of Jade, for obvious reasons, do not incur the particular dangers, although they may still trigger Backlash as normal.

You may attempt this roll a number of times equal to your Focus, or until Compromised, whichever is earlier--to a minimum of once. Results from attempts are cumulative.
Advantages/Disadvantages applied to this step: Dead Eyes, Bishamon's Blessing, Large Stature, Quick Reflexes, Daredevil, Soft Hearted

The Legion succeeds if 25+ Momentum are accrued. Characters who have a net positive Momentum contribution receive major Honor gains (Core Rules, pg. 300); the character with the highest positive Momentum contribution additionally gains an equal amount of Status, as the command staff recognize and reward difficult actions. Any Momentum points accrued in excess of 25 are allocated evenly to the Legion’s Strength and Discipline, with Discipline gaining any odd points out.

If the Legion fails to accrue 25 or more Momentum, it fails. Shippai escapes into the wastes, leaving confusion and chaos in his wake. The shortfall is divided between the Legion’s Strength and Discipline, lowering them evenly, with Discipline losing any odd points out.

In the Name of Jizo: Mercy
(Only if the Legion succeeds, of course, but go ahead and roll it for ease of bookkeeping.)

With Shippai laying broken both mentally and physically at the army’s feet, this next course of action is clear…isn’t it? A quick swing of the sword to the man’s neck, the priest offers some prayers, we burn the body, and take his swords home…right?

Having been roused by the great row, the army’s leadership seems…conflicted on the next course of action.
Hiruma Akako: “The man is a traitor, a murderer, and a liability. The only mercy he has earned is a swift execution and a prayer for his soul.”
Bayushi Najimi: “He may be those, but he is also a Legion commander, a victim of the Enemy we have sworn to fight, and a potential source of information. Perhaps we could learn something of use by keeping him prisoner rather than simply sending him straight to Emma-O.”

Ultimately, the decision lies with the CO, but perhaps the enigmatic Dragon could be swayed one way or the other with the right arguments.
Players may make a single Courtesy TN 4 (Earth 5, Fire 5, Void 2). They may support either Akako or Najimi. On a success, they earn a single point for their side. Failures or bonuses successes offer no benefit/penalty.
If Hiruma Akako’s side has the most points, Shippai will be immediately executed, and his daisho shall be entrusted to Akako. There are no other effects from Akako winning.

If Bayushi Najimi’s side wins, Shippai will be taken prisoner and Najimi will take custody of Shippai’s daisho. This will reduce the Legion’s Strength and Discipline (5 Discipline, 2 Strength) as they must devote resources to his guarding Shippai and listening to his mad howls once he awakens. Shippai will be a liability for the rest of the game, but should he remain in captivity throughout, there will be a special reward next game.

If both sides end the event in a tie, Akako cuts the conversation and the captive short with a swift sword strike. “This is not a Winter Court where we must find ways to fill the hours. This is the battlefield, and decisions must be swift.”

In either event, Osoroshii takes direct command of the Sixth Company after this event.

Advantages/Disadvantages applied to this step: Bluntness, Benten's Curse, Stained Lineage, Provocation, Flowery Language, Belligerent, Ferocity
Non-Human || GM || Headmaster of Hope's Peak Academy

"Now then, what is it you want to show us? It better not be boring, or I'll be VERY unhappy~!"

Hametsu has finished the work of the day, having filed the last of the headcount reports from the march, and is just drifting off to sleep when he hears it: the unmistakable sound of a sword cutting first air, then flesh, and then the scream of the murdered. He rises, but no sooner has he laid his hand on his bow than he hears it...the first whisper.

What is the first principle of warfare, Ichiro-chan?

And then his own voice, shouting, just as he did when he was a boy.

Defeat the Enemy!

He can see his mother's approving smile in his mind's eye.

And what must we do to defeat the enemy?

Frustrate his plans!

It's cold, her disapproval. It always was. Her smile disappears like the sun behind a storm cloud and leaves him in darkness.

Ie, Ichiro-chan. One does not defeat the enemy by frustrating his plans. One defeats the Enemy by doing whatever it takes. Your army must be a sword in your hand: flexible, strong, disciplined. It must cut with no thought but your own. And your thoughts must be pure: putting aside vanity, you must give thought only to applying your sword where it will end the enemy. You must kill him, or you must undo his efforts, or you must leave him gasping for succor from allies who will never come. You must cut away his ambition. You must cut away his strength. You must cut away his hope.

I can give it to you.

What will you give to me?

The sword.

An army?

Take the sword. Cut the Enemy.

I do not...

No thought but your own.
Take it.

And he saw it, an army of men stretching out before him. Men with no expressions. Men with no thoughts but his own. Men with no feet.
And he desired it. And that desire woke something up within Hametsu that forced his eyes wide open.

"No!"

He dashed out of the tent, yumi in hand. Taking quick stock of the situation, he pointed to a group of ashigaru. "Mirumoto-chui has forgotten himself. Get your spears across the thoroughfare. Work together. Keep him contained." He looked right. "You! Get your squad! Cut off the camp entrance!."

He positioned himself at the shoulder of his impromptu peasant unit, arrow nocked, and directed their efforts to force the mad chui back from the sensitive areas of camp.

He will not have been the only man tested today, but he is one who has failed. The ranks cannot be permitted to believe that one can murder a fellow legionnaire and continue to live."

Yoshi isn't the most spiritual of folk. But even HE can feel the hairs of his neck stand on end as he needs to evaluate the situation. There is something in the air tonight. It promised him riches, fame, a woman's heart...

Wait, since when have I wanted their heart?
Get out of my head!

There are someone going crazy. Yoshi isn't exactly helpful in bringing him down but he does marshall people to try to contain the situation.

Edogawa woke abruptly. Something was wrong, he could feel it. Of course, feelings meant nothing without evidence. He rose and began searching the camp for any disturbance and soon found the issue. Madness had come and death would soon follow.

Just the beginning little shinigami. There will surely be more.

"I didn't cause this." he whispered

You know better Edogawa.

"I won't let this happen."

What can you do?

The Kitsuki joined the others attempting to kill the Mirumoto. He did not aid them, however, he slowed them and hindered them subtlety, hoping to avoid the inevitable death of a Dragon.

Once it was all over, Edogawa studied Shippai's broken form. He didn't know the man, but he felt certain that this was not the fate he desired. Not with the consequences it would bring. This was not a mercy. He couldn't ignore the whispers now. It nearly broke the Kitsuki to voice support for execution.

Post by Daidoji Nobu » Tue Jun 25, 2024 7:32 pm

Nobu blearily opened his eyes, then realized that the shouts of alarm had been going for some time. Hurrying out of his tent, the big Crane headed towards the commotion, only to discover the commander of the Sixth waving his swords around, seemingly gone mad.

Someone…someone should do something, Nobu thought to himself. Attacking a superior officer was wrong, but the Mirumoto had clearly taken leave of his senses…it was certain that Shippai would hurt someone if he wasn’t stopped. A sense of resolve filled the Crane. I should do something, he decided.

“C’mon! We’ve got to stop him!” Nobu shouted to the other onlookers, before rushing to subdue the crazed officer. Dodging the Mirumoto’s windmilling blades, the Daidoji stepped in close to try and grab Shippai in an arm lock.

The crazed chui continued to flail about with his blades, and to stop him, Nobu delivered a powerful punch to the man’s nose. The strike would’ve been enough to stop a normal man, but the madman’s unholy vitality kept him going. Nobu had to keep pounding on Shippai over and over with his meaty fists, and a sick feeling filled the Daidoji as bone and cartilage crunched under his punches. The big Crane had won many wrestling matches in his day, but always the opponent had yielded before anyone was seriously hurt. This… this wasn’t the same.

Finally Shippai fell to the ground, unmoving, barely recognizable under the bruises and blood. Nobu looked at his bloodied fists, then stepped back from the fallen chui, trembling from the exertion. He had beaten an honorable man nearly to death. It had to be done, he tried to tell himself, but it was cold comfort.

As the other officers gathered to discuss Shippai’s fate, Nobu tried to pull himself together long enough to say a few words.

“Mirumoto-chui deserves better,” Nobu said. He managed to keep his voice steady, but his hands shook a little as he spoke. “He served the Legion honorably. Like any wounded soldier, he deserves a chance to recover from what has happened... if he can.”

Kaigen was part of the night watch, and normally woke up around this time anyway, so snapping himself out of a light dream was no great hardship.

The whispers in his head, offering power and purpose, well...
He was a Hare. He'd been warned about this kind of shit more or less from birth, and anyway, he wasn't a man terribly burdened by ambition.

We can make you MORE, you can be so much more, you can humble those snotty bastards all around you, you could become strong enough to crush any bandit filth, you-

"I'm good." The same dismissive tone he generally used in most conversations, as if the kansen were just some unctuous courtiers trying to get him to venture an opinion they could mock.

Oh look, it's a crazy Dragon. Never seen one of those before.

Guess I'd better try to kill him.

He drew his sword and charged in.

He wasn't exactly one to take pride in it, but Usagi Kaigen was a mad bastard in a scrum, veteran of more than one ugly little knife-fight, and he went at the mad Dragon with a blend of speed and strength that his sensei- the hateful old bastard- would no doubt have approved of.

Something about a fight just removed everything but the quite natural and healthy impulse to hack the other guy to pieces before he could do the same to you, and Kaigen didn't bother with niceties like feinting or going for disabling strikes.

His favored means of disabling a foe was taking their head off, and his only real frustration as the fight wore on was that it was proving so difficult.

While these were the hours Mukai usually slept she was still a skilled scout and easy to rouse especially so early on.

Her mind reeling from the new and strange whispers she rushes towards her mount. Taking a moment to lean her head against the strong and unyielding steed she did her best to draw upon that example while reciting the obstacles her ancestors had overcome to be here in this time and place, "Hachiko, give me strength."

It was perhaps more difficult than she would wish to admit to herself later but, in the end, she still pushed the voices aside as she took her place atop Hachiko, strung her bow, and wheeled into the fray.

The pair whirl around the melee launching arrow after arrow at the fallen samurai. Though a few shots deflect from armor more drive deeply home than fail to hit the mark.

---

Once the fight comes to its, in her eyes inevitable, conclusion of victory she sides with the Hiruma though no one really hears her words among the din. What could they possibly learn from someone who had only just fallen. Anything he said that we did not already know would clearly be deceit.

Rouse to Wakefulness
Roll Command, Meditation, Skulduggery, or Survival, TN 3 (Air 2, Void 2). Success allows you to become aware of the danger and proceed to Resist the Darkness; failure does not.

You may attempt this roll a number of times equal to your Vigilance. You contribute a number of Momentum to this Event equal to your Vigilance minus the number of attempts you make at this roll, to a minimum of zero.

Advantages/Disadvantages applied to this step: Cognitive Lapses
Vigilance: 2

First roll: Rouse to Wakefulness | TN: 2 | Success: 0 / Opportunity: 3 / Strife: 1
Image Image Image Image
One opportunity to nuke strife.
Two opportunity to notice or detect another sign of the supernatural if there is a spiritual disturbance in the scene.
I believe that void recovery is triggered.

2nd Roll: Rouse to Wakefulness 2nd shot | TN: 2 | Success: 2 / Opportunity: 3 / Strife: 1
Image Image Image Image Image
One opportunity to nuke strife.
One opportunity to reduce the TN of your next Earth check by 1.
One opportunity to reduce any effect on your environment (and physical traces of your efforts) to a minimum.

No momentum contribution.

Resist the Darkness
Roll Culture, Theology, or Meditation, using any approach, against TN 3. Success adds one Momentum, plus one for every two bonus Successes. Failure constrains character behavior, as noted on Confront the Danger, below.

Characters may stake Honor on this roll, gaining one additional rolled Skill die per Rank (edited to clarify: 10 points) staked on the roll. (Keep in mind that failing a roll means forfeiting the staked Honor.)
Resist the Darkness | TN: 2 | Success: 2 / Opportunity: 0 / Strife: 2

I staked honor and used void.
2 successes: 1 momentum contributed.
2 strife gained.

Confront the Danger
Roll a Martial Skill of their choice -or- Theology, any approach, TN 3, fighting against the crazed and darkly empowered commander. This counts as a Martial Skill check for all purposes, targeting Shippai. Success adds 1 Momentum, plus 1 for every 2 bonus successes. Failure imposes no direct penalty.
Advantages/Disadvantages applied to this step: Dead Eyes, Bishamon's Blessing, Large Stature, Quick Reflexes, Daredevil, Soft Hearted, Ferocity
Casting roll for Yari of Air: Casting roll for Yari of Air | TN: 1 | Success: 1 / Opportunity: 1 / Strife: 2

Support action. Gained 1 more strife for a total of 3.

On the edge of rest, Daikumo just barely senses that something is off, but he does so early enough that he can react to the danger quickly. He gets out of his tent and begins scanning the surroundings for what he sensed. The whispers hit his ears and find nothing but a bulwark of will and resistance. They get nowhere as they try to corrupt his heart. In fact, he kind of uses them to sense where they are strongest and identify where he needs to go next, rushing off and ending up near the Mirumoto commander as his rampage begins. This is dangerous, and he needs to be put down immediately. The giant Agasha can see the Mirumoto losing his mind and determines that it's best if he loses his life before others do and the Mirumoto weakens the Legion in this place.

Daikumo roars!

He hefts his Yari overhead and begins bringing it down at the commander, before spinning to the right and coming in at an odd angle rather than a direct attack, flowing around the Mirumoto as easily as any trained warrior would. He waits and finds opportunities to move around the battlefield, striking from overhead behind smaller allies, and sneaking in with low hits from between others. Daikumo completely gives up on the idea of fighting like a strict regimented unit in this situation and choses to flow like water in and out of the fighting. And his strikes are laced with a desire to bring the Mirumoto's rampage to a violent end, not holding back in the least.

Then Shippai is down.

And then Akako and Najimi begin debating what to do with the deranged commander. Without any tact or anyone asking Daikumo says, "Cut his damned head off before it grows tentacles or something. Why is this an argument?" Daikumo says through a growling sneer as he walks away, done with the stupidity of trying to question a madman.

He ultimately waits nearby to see how it all shakes out, but he just wants to go back to bed. He pulled a muscle since he didn't get the opportunity to warm up or stretch and it hurts. The giant Dragon is barely concealing his seething from his spot.

It was hard not to notice the changes in the land, and the kami, as the army continued south. Mari kept expecting the whispers of corrupted spirits; she'd been warned of them, after all. Instead, it was just so spiritually quiet compared to Phoenix lands that she found herself sometimes straining to 'hear.' Had Tsuki passed this way? Felt the silence?

As if the thoughts had summoned her old friend, she found her when dreaming, sitting at tea, discussing a pillow book mystery with a Kitsuki protagonist trying to find another explanation for a murder that seemed to have been committed with two swords and a Bayushi magistrate all too happy to make political hay at the closest Mirumoto bushi's expense. But something wasn't right, there was a vicious light to her friend's eyes tearing into some odd plot hole--as holes opened in the table and scrolls, and Tsuki's voice dipped into a snarl for just a moment before continuing her earnest critique. Mari frowned, sitting back...looking around and trying to place where she was, to remember how she got there, wasn't she supposed to be somewhere else?

She woke with a gasp to cries of some sort of alarm in the distance, and a voice in the darkness that whispered like the breath of night. "They found her at the edge of camp. They think she's a spy. They'll kill her...we're fast enough to stop them, if you ask us, if you let us, if you give us the strength to fly..." For a moment, she reached for her satchel, for the offerings to let them fly. Found a chill brushing her hand as it fell on her knife, wrapping her fingers with the eagerness of a lover's hand and a sense of hunger. But that wasn't right...the kami didn't need knives for offerings, even those of the body they would simply take--the elements dissolving, sublimating into elemental energy.

She shivered, freezing for a moment before the invisible, unknown voices masquerading as those she's known all her life, the childhood instinct of 'if I move they'll get me' chilling her heart and stilling her hands.

Another cry snaps her head toward it and breaks the spell of fear. She draws her hand back, reaching for her robe instead to tie hastily in place. "No! I'll go instead and see." Something wasn't right, but the voices might still be telling the truth about her friend. The satchel is snatched up in passing and she's soon running toward the commotion, ribbons snapping in the air behind her.

Instead, she sees another villain with two swords and no question of his guilt. Was the dream a warning? No time to ponder that kind of question as the creature--vaguely recognized by his helmet, two swords, some symbol of rank seen in flickering firelight--reaches for someone and is struck by several. Hard to see the color of his blood in the darkness. That's fine, the scroll Mari draws will do him no harm if he's merely insane. Her hands shake as she calls to the sparse, sluggish kami of the earth here, holding and releasing their purity toward the attacker.

HIs cries make it obvious the jade light has found him corrupt and she asks the earth to seal up his mouth, silence his tongue. So poor Mirumoto-chui is eerily silent under the barrage of blows and pure green light pummeling him into stillness to match.

***

When their commanders argue as to his disposition, she's honestly surprised. There's a protocol for this, and the Crab are trained into it almost from birth, aren't they? "We'll have enough dangers to face without trying to swaddle one up and tuck it among the supplies. Hiruma-sama has the experience to know how this should end.

Masayuki heard the shouting of chaos in his dreams and as it continued, he finally realized it wasn't a dram at all. He jumps up grabs his tetsubo and moves toward the noise, picking up his pace until he arrives at the scene. The Commander of the Sixth has is gripped with madness, flailing his swords around at anyone who approaches.

Masayuki knew what he had to do. He marshals those stalled around him. "Grab your arrows and make sure the camp perimeter is secure. Go!"

It is then he hears the voices, but he has not time for them. The danger must be quelled lest it grow.

He notices some are approaching, but their hearts aren't in it. He send those milling about to alert the medical tent of possible casualties and to stay strong. He alerts a few legionnaires who seem to have their wits about them. "Keep an eye on the crowd and raise a shout if anyone else displays such trouble."
As the others slowly depart or relocate themselves to the perimeter of the immediate area, he turns to those remaining. “Everyone!" he shouts. "We’ve got to stop him now before anyone else gets hurt! Follow me!"

Masayuki steps forward to give others space while avoiding the whirling blades of the crazed Dragon. Sadly, he had seen this kind of thing before.

The honorable dragon has lost full control of his senses. Masayuki raises his Tetsubo and strikes him from the side. The second strike hits in the chui in the arm, and yet he battles on. Masayuki turns Lady Sun toward the Dragon with two more mighty blows. Then he sees the big Daidoji give one last blow to the face and Shippai is down, battered almost beyond recognition, the crazed look still in his eyes.

It's never a good thing when an honorable man succumbs to darkness, and it can happen to anyone. We will mourn him the same, but our duty is necessary for the good of the Empire and its people.

As the other officers begin to discuss Shippai’s fate, Masayuki listens to the arguments, knowing the right answer. There is no recovery from this.

As no others seem to be exhibiting signs and some seem disturbed by events, Masayuki invites them to sit by the fire and share their remembrances of Shippai before tonight. "Tonight portends what we may see on the rest of the journey. But for now, remember who he was, his honor and glory, for that was truly him."

Continuing to work hard in his duties, Osamu had been aided in sleeping in the strange environment by his exhaustion. But of course, even exhaustion could only do so much in the face of grave anxiety.

...

Osamu had resisted the darkness and helped take down the crazed Dragon samurai, but it was his unexpectedly compelling argument in support of his clanmate, Bayushi Najimi, that most defined his participation that night. For the usually meek and forgettable shugenja to capture the attention of all the gathered samurai speaking just from deep within his spirit was... memorable, certainly, if not that much more persuasive than what others said - especially to Hiruma Akiko and her allies.

Thank you for participating!

Looks like y'all collectively earned 65 Momentum, meaning you surpassed the basic success threshold, capturing Shippai--and a *lot* more.
The Legion's Strength and Discipline increase by 20.
If you had a positive net Momentum contribution, gain 6 points of Honor.
Agasha Daikumo, gain 6 points of Status; looks like you contributed the most Momentum.
Please make notes in your PFs

Looks like a tie between arguments for Najimi and Akako, so Akako wins; Shippai is dead, and his daisho is being taken in for Kuni attention before being sent back to Dragon lands.

(If you think I've erred in my counts, please PM me--gently.)
